About the exhibition
One zone recreates the living room of painter Pak No-soo, with furniture, ceramics and collected stones the artist treasured. Another is a media art room where drawings colored by visitors become moving natural scenery. The show itself marks the museum's 12th anniversary and looks at how Pak thought about nature, through work from the 1970s to the 2000s.
All of this sits in the artist's former house in Seochon. Built around 1937, it blends building styles and is mainly Korean in manner, with underfloor heating and wooden-floored rooms on the first floor, a wooden-floored room upstairs and three fireplaces. In 2011 Pak signed an agreement with Jongno District to donate toward a public museum, which opened in September 2013.
About the artist
Pak No-soo (1927 to 2013) was born in Yeongi County, South Chungcheong Province, now part of Sejong. The Encyclopedia of Korean Culture says Pak studied with Lee Sang-beom and graduated from Seoul National University in 1952. It also records that Seonsoun (1955) won the first Presidential Award given in the Eastern painting division of the National Art Exhibition. Pak taught at Ewha Womans University from 1956 to 1962 and at Seoul National University from 1962 to 1982. The encyclopedia describes the work of the 1960s and 1970s as joining East Asian line with a fresh sense of color.
