About the exhibition

Asia's first museum survey of Lynn Hershman Leeson, an American pioneer of media art. About 200 works on the second and third floors of SeMA's Seosomun building run from painting and sculpture to interactive media, AI and genetic engineering.

Six decades of work follow the artist's questions about identity, surveillance and the line between people and machines. SeMA frames the show around one question: who am I, and how far do I extend, in the age of AI? Three key interactive works appear in Korean versions for the first time.

Vogue Korea names Roberta's Construction Chart #1 (1975), Tillie, the Telerobotic Doll (1995) and CybeRoberta (1996/2026) among the works. SeMA also lists feature films at Seoul Art Cinema, so check the schedule if you want to see them.

About the artist

Lynn Hershman Leeson, born in Cleveland in 1941, is an American artist and filmmaker whose work looks at identity, surveillance and the relationship between people and technology. Roberta Breitmore, begun in 1973, is a performance in which the artist lived as a fictional woman with a real bank account, credit cards and a psychiatrist. Agent Ruby, started in 1998, is an AI web character that visitors can chat with. Honors include a Golden Nica in 1999 and a special mention from the jury at the 2022 Venice Biennale, and the work is in collections including MoMA.
