Jungran Noh: Dance with Colors
노정란: 색과 함께 춤을
About the exhibition
Jungran Noh has spread paint with a brush, swept it with a broom, wiped it and, most recently, walked on it. Each change leaves more of the body and of time on the canvas, and color builds in layers that overlap, soak in and sometimes clash.
Sungkok Art Museum calls this the artist's first large retrospective, running from the 1970s to 2026 in paintings and drawings. The broom works arrived in the mid-2000s, after a period from the late 1980s spent on how colors relate and how a surface is built.
The colors come from memory: gold rice fields, a jade well, wild asters, the peonies of folk painting, temple paintwork. Noh calls these canvases Mind Landscape. Color field painting and minimalism, met during study in the United States, left their mark, and the museum also sees links to Art Informel and Dansaekhwa, while keeping color at the center.
