Kim Yun Shin: In the Continuum

About the exhibition
Past and recent works share the ground and second floors of the gallery: paintings, wood sculptures and what Kim Yun Shin calls "painting-sculpture," a language that brings painting and wood sculpture together. The exhibition page pictures pieces including Add Two Add One Divide Two Divide One 1996-538 (1996), Waves of Joy 2024-10 (2024) and Grace in the Glow 2025-38 (2025).
Lehmann Maupin says the show is about how nature, material and the artist's physical gesture stay linked over time. It is the artist's first solo show at the Seoul gallery, after about 40 years of working in Argentina, Mexico and elsewhere before returning to Korea. The gallery sees a new chapter opening as the artist meets Korean landscapes again. The show follows a large 2026 retrospective at the Hoam Museum of Art in Yongin.
About the artist
Kim Yun Shin (b. 1935, Wonsan) works in Korea and Argentina. Lehmann Maupin describes the artist as a first-generation woman sculptor in Korea, with nature as a subject for some 60 years. Kim studied in France in the 1960s, moved to Argentina in 1984 and also worked in Mexico and Brazil. The main material is durable wood, and early 1970s sculptures draw on hanok joinery, which fits timbers together without nails. The gallery notes works in the collections of the Guggenheim and Harvard Art Museums. The Korea Herald reported the Hoam show as the artist's first museum retrospective.
