About the exhibition
CR Collective has painted its gallery walls in the so-called "Asian flesh tone", so a question greets you at the door: whose body set the standard for a color treated as neutral, and whose data decides skin color when AI makes an image?
Three artists respond without using AI, each taking up one of Hoffmann's three failures from Offenbach's opera.
Jong Oh's Light Drawing (Reflection) series lines up identical forms of light and repeats them endlessly in mirrors, recalling Giulietta, who takes Hoffmann's reflection. In front of it, your image overlaps with the stranger's beside you.
Donghoon Gang pairs Antonia, who dies if she sings, with the colonial-era poet Yi Sang: bodies limited by illness, desires under censorship. Fragments of Yi Sang's "AU MAGASIN DE NOUVEAUTES" appear in the entrance, elevator, stairs and roof. A lecture performance filmed live in one take returns as a two-channel video, and Gang's Not Quite My Tempo! swings from march to jazz, recalling music suppressed under the Nazis, who also banned Offenbach.
Meekyoung Shin's lenticular Dear Angel, Is It You? may first pass for a flawless AI baby. It shows a reborn doll and changes subtly as you move. People name, hold and dress these dolls knowing what they are, and Shin looks closely at that attachment.
The show marks CR Collective's 10th anniversary. The women Hoffmann loves prove illusions or misreadings, much like AI hallucination, and today's hidden prompter is no single figure but a spread of technical and social conditions.
