Meekyoung Shin: Becoming Stone: From the Remains
신미경: Becoming Stone
About the exhibition
Large rock-like masses built from stacked ceramic fragments are at the center of this show, and they look like ancient relics or lumps of mineral. AOD Museum says this is Meekyoung Shin's first solo show in Korea focused on the Megalith series. The series began in 2019 while Shin was working at EKWC in the Netherlands, after finding many fragments left when another artist's large ceramic piece broke during kiln firing.
The new Unknown Painting series (2026) hangs on the wall like painting. Jesmonite, a casting material, and metal powder are spread and built up, so the surface shows traces of the material rather than a depicted image.
The museum's text treats sculpture as something that keeps changing through chance and its surroundings. It reads the "remains" of the title as a finished event that can start something new, and asks what we read from objects and how we name them.
About the artist
Meekyoung Shin (b. 1967) was born in South Korea and lives and works in London and Seoul. Shin studied sculpture at Seoul National University (BA, MA) and the Slade School of Fine Art (MFA), and glass and ceramics at the Royal College of Art (MA). Vogue Korea describes the artist's practice as making classical forms, of the kind one would expect in marble or stone, out of soap. The artist's CV lists collections including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Leeum, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
