About the exhibition

Three works in two second-floor lounges follow Cat A, an imaginary cat said to roam around the museum. In Lounge 3 you turn the handle on what Financial News calls a round wooden structure. Gears and cloth rub together, and the noise blends with live sound streamed from devices the artist installed near the museum, so everyday sounds slowly turn strange. Financial News reports that the work also converts ultrasonic frequencies that cats can detect into sounds people can hear.

Your movements connect to a round screen in Lounge 2, where your path overlaps with the cat's route through Nowon-gu. Financial News names this work Field Tracker. In 보편타당한 숲, drawers hold soil, bird feathers and small stones that add up to one cat's life. The paper counts 72 drawers in a sixteen-sided wooden structure, with sound the artist recorded around Nowon-gu playing inside.

The Korean title pairs a term for conditions that always hold with "you," a single being with a particular body, to ask whom sensory standards serve.

About the artist

SimLee Da Eun (b. 1995) walks the routes of wild animals and endangered species to record sound in the field. The museum's text says that the recordings reach the gallery through microphones, speakers and live streaming. Since 2023 the artist has made a series titled 보편타당한, which looks at the conditions surrounding ecosystems. Financial News reports that the series had centered on outdoor field trips and performance, and that this show is its first reworking for a museum space.
