Haneyl Choi: Sleepwalking
최하늘: 이갈이
About the exhibition
Financial News reports that this show has 12 sculptures, including the artist's first kinetic (moving) work. In a series titled 죽는 중 ("dying"), sculptures are pulled up by motors and then fall, and another sculpture travels along a 20-meter rail. The same report says a huge fan-shaped plinth makes visitors walk a wide route around the work.
Art Sonje Center says Haneyl Choi began exploring the body's interior after seeing a cross-section of the artist's own injured finger. The show centers on times when the body stops following the mind: sleepwalking, a drunken stagger or a hypnic jerk (the sudden twitch as you fall asleep).
About the artist
Haneyl Choi (b. 1991) works mainly in sculpture, asking what people want, what society expects and how people see themselves. Art Sonje Center says the artist treats a person as a place where conflicting desires and impulses meet, and uses the body as a key sculptural device. The center lists solo shows at P21, Seoul (2022), Arario Museum, Seoul (2021) and Commonwealth and Council, Los Angeles (2018). Group shows include Hauser & Wirth, Hong Kong (2025), the Gwangju Biennale (2024), Esther Schipper, Berlin (2023) and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon (2019).
