About the exhibition

About 100 works fill the second-floor gallery and the first-floor outdoor garden: major pieces, new work, unreleased drawings and archive material. They range from plywood pieces of 1983 and 1987 to the video Crossroad (2008) and a site-specific installation made with discarded fishing gear. The show has a prologue, three parts and an epilogue.

This is the second show in the museum's series on leading Korean sculptors. It covers about 40 years of Sook Jin Jo's work in New York across painting, sculpture, installation, photography, performance, public projects and architecture.

The museum reads the idea of passing in the Korean title as something other than plain loss. The artist treats discarded wood and objects as things holding their own memory and potential for life, and sees everything as connected. Admission is free.

About the artist

Sook Jin Jo (b. 1960, Gwangju) entered Hongik University's graduate school in 1982 and experimented in the early 1980s with plywood, floor covering and board paper, the Seoul Museum of Art says. The artist held a first solo show at Kwanhoon Gallery in 1985 and moved to New York in 1988, where the work has continued for about 40 years.
